HERBAL MEDICINE

What is Herbal Medicine?

Herbal Medicine is the use of plants to treat disease; it is the oldest known form of medicine and is used by over 70% of the world’s population.

Echinacea Flower

The medicinal properties of plants were discovered many thousands of years ago and through trial and error the most effective local species of plants were identified.

These days the advancement of science has enabled herbalists to properly identify the chemical properties found within these plants which allow a better understanding of their ability to heal.

What Can Herbal Medicine Treat?

Herbal Medicine can be used to treat almost any condition a patient may see their doctor about. Some of the more common complaints I treat include skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema, digestive disorders such as peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion.

Problems involving the heart and circulation like angina and high blood pressure can also be treated successfully as can conditions such as arthritis, insomnia, stress, migraine, headaches and allergic responses like hay fever and asthma.

Herbalists know when a condition is best seen by a doctor or another therapist and may make referrals if appropriate.

YOUR PRACTITIONER

My Approach
I take a holistic approach to disease often confronting underlying issues rather than tackling symptoms alone. The reason I take this approach is because aiming to cure or suppress the symptoms will not rid the body of disease. I use plant remedies to strengthen and restore balance to the affected parts of the body to support its own natural ability to heal.

All patients receive a short informal consultation which is free of charge, this is an opportunity for the patient to meet with me and discuss a possible course of treatment.

If the patient decides to proceed with treatment they will be given a questionnaire to complete and bring to their initial appointment. The initial appointment usually lasts about an hour, during this time I will build a picture of the patient as a whole person and a treatment plan will be discussed.

Healing is a matter of teamwork with the patient, the herbalist and the prescribed treatment working together to restore health; this may involve nutritional and lifestyle guidance as well as the herbal remedy.

After the initial appointment a treatment plan will be prepared which will include a nutritional report if appropriate as well as the herbal remedy which may be in the form of teas, creams, tinctures, oils etc. A second appointment will follow in two weeks and follow ups will usually occur on a fortnightly basis depending on the patient and the treatment.
